Abstract

Talking about the integrity of a discourse, this cannot be separated from the cohesion and coherence structures contained in it. Or in other words, a discourse is said to be intact if it has cohesion and coherence. One type of discourse is news. Lately, the news related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has been increasingly sticking out and stealing public attention. To see how the integrity of the news is related, it is necessary to analyze the discourse to see the cohesion and coherence structure. Therefore, this study aims to analyze cohesion and coherence in news discourse. The type of research used is qualitative research with descriptive research design. This research focuses on analyzing the discourse contained in the news entitled “the poor condition of hospitals in northern Gaza threatens the lives of 400,000 people” sourced from the Aljazeera.net website. The results showed that the discourse in the news contained elements of cohesion and coherence. In the news analyzed there is grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion includes reference, substitution and conjunction, while lexical cohesion includes repetition, synonym, antonym, and collocation. The coherence in the news is cause-effect, temporal, detail relationships and purpose. While coherence is dominated by the type of causality (cause-effect relationship). The discourse Structure in the news is dominated by conjunction grammatical cohesion and dominated by causality type coherence.
