Abstract
The method of learning Arabic is an important factor for the success of learning Arabic, the accuracy of which is still questionable in choosing this method. This qualitative study aims to obtain information on the application of the gramatikal and translation methods in learning Arabic, the obstacles encountered, and the results of the application of these methods. This study involved an Arabic teacher and 74 students (32 students, 38 grade VIII girls) who were presented as research subjects. The data obtained using the method of observation, document study, and interviews. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the application of the gramatikal and translation methods at MTsN 2 Binjai is still in the fairly good category. The obstacles faced by students are not fluent in reading the Qur'an, learning facilities are inadequate, students' enthusiasm in learning Arabic is low, time to study Arabic is limited due to regulations from the center, and students are not familiar with learning earlier Arabic. Following up on the findings in this study, the empowerment of Arabic language learning must be optimized through early learning of Arabic and recitation of the Qur'an, learning facilities, and the duration of extra-curricular-based learning time.
